Choosing the right breeder is the first step in finding your puppy.  The most important thing is finding someone you trust.  Check out the questions and answers below for some ideas about what to ask when you are looking for a breeder.

Our goal is to breed healthy, happy dogs so you will have a best friend for years to come.  Nothing is more important to us than earning your trust.  We believe in maintaining long-term relationships with our customers, so you know you can call us any time if you ever need anything.

We know several other breeders in the region.  If we are not the right fit for you, or if we do not have a litter of puppies available, we are happy to refer you to someone we trust.

What to ask

Selecting a breeder is a big decision.  You want someone you can trust.  Here are some things to ask about when deciding which breeder is right for you.

— Why do you breed dogs?  If they say anything other than “Love,” find another breeder.

— What is your breeding philosophy? For example…. Are they breeding show dogs or companion dogs? Do they believe in cropping tails? Make sure their philosophy fits well with what you are looking for.

— Do the mom and dad of the litter both live in the home?  What is their temperament like?  How big are they?  What were their previous litters like?

— Can you provide references? A good breeder should be happy to put you in touch with at least a half-dozen previous customers.

— What kind of food do you give the puppies?

— What things do you do to ensure the puppies are well socialized?

— Do you offer a health guarantee?  A good breeder offers a 1-year guarantee for genetic illnesses.

__ Do you do genetic testing on your dogs to ensure they are clear of genetic illnesses?

— Be sure to check out the breeder’s home.  A home says a lot about a person! Is it clean and well maintained? If they don’t take care of their home, are you sure you want them taking care of your puppy?

–Are the puppies raised inside your home, and do all your dogs live inside? If the answer is ‘no,’ this is not a good breeder.

— How many litters have these particular parents had together?

— What can you tell me about the health of the puppies from previous litters?

— How does the puppy selection process work?

— How often will you send pictures and updates after the puppies are born?

— How do you decide whether or not to breed a female?

— How do you ensure that your pups will be healthy and free of genetic illness?

Ask lots of questions and get them talking. A good breeder loves talking about their dogs! The breeder should also ask you lots of questions about what you are looking for, and what kind of home you will provide for the puppy.
