Ever wondered if your dog likes those hugs, kisses, and caresses? Well, it's time to learn some doggie body language that can answer that question!
How do most dogs like to be petted?
Although there are exceptions to every rule, most dogs like to be petted from their collar down to their butt or on their belly or chest. It's much less common for dogs to enjoy being petted on the face.
Want to know how you can tell if your dog is enjoying it? Pet them for a moment and then stop. If they walk away, they probably weren't that into it. If they lean into you, paw you, or rub themselves on you, they are likely enjoying whatever you were doing!
Ever noticed your dog ducking their head when someone tries to pet their head? They aren't being rude, they just don't like being touched on their head! If someone tries to pet your dog and they duck away, suggest that they come up from the side and pet your dog's side or chest.
If your dog seems like they aren't interested, don't force them to take the attention - maybe they just aren't in the mood!
What about kids?
It's especially important for kids to avoid petting dogs on their face. Not only does this put their face right at face level with the dog (which can be dangerous if the dog isn't enjoying it!), small puppies tend to take kids hands into their mouths if their fingers are right there. And nobody appreciates little puppy alligator teeth in their fingers! Suggest petting puppies on their side to avoid nips and tears!
