Is a Poodle Right for Me?
Poodles are one of the most popular family breeds. They are known for being friendly, intelligent, athletic, and loving dogs with a great sense of humor.
What can I expect from a poodle's personality?
Poodles are smart, funny, goofy dogs with big hearts who want to please their owners. And when we say smart, we mean it! Our poodles know lots of different words and often seem to know what we want before we ever even ask them! Poodles make great therapy dogs and service dogs. As a matter of fact, two of our dogs are certified therapy dogs and one of our dogs is trained as an allergy alert dog. She can find a nut anywhere in a room before you know it!
Poodles tend to match your energy. They are happy to go on a 15 mile run or lay around on the couch.
Poodles are affectionately referred to as "velcro dogs." They want to be with you! They even faithfully wait outside the bathroom door!
Are poodles good with kids?
Yes! Poodles make great family pets. They are loving and affectionate with children. In fact, our dogs are always drawn to children and babies. Our puppies get lots of socialization with children before they ever go home! Liz runs a day camp and the puppies spend time with children every day.
If I'm allergic to dogs, will I be allergic to a poodle?
Almost certainly not. Poodles do not shed and produce very little dander. They are one of the few hypoallergenic breeds of dogs.
Regular bathing can help cut down on allergic reactions as well because environmental allergens can cling to a dogs coat.
We encourage anyone who is concerned about allergies to come visit our dogs and see if they are allergic.
Are labradoodles and goldendoodles just as good for people with allergies?
We urge people with allergies to be cautious about "doodles." You may not be allergic to the labradoodle pup, but once its adult coat comes in, your body may react the same as it would to a labrador.
How much exercise does a poodle need?
Poodles love to be active! They want to go on all your outdoor adventures! They were originally bred as bird hunting dogs and love to play fetch. If your puppy is barking, chewing on furniture, nipping, etc., he probably just needs to get out and play for a few minutes. The proper amount of exercise can solve most behavior problems!
If you love to run, we recommend waiting until your dog is full grown to run on pavement for more than about 30 minutes. If your dog is off leash on a trail, he can do more because he will be able to go at his own pace.
Not a runner? Poodles love to play fetch in the yard or visit the dog park for playtime with other dogs.
Are Poodles Athletic?
You bet! Whether you want to do a long-distance trail run or spend the day XC skiing, your poodle will be up for the adventure. Poodles were orginally bred as bird hunting dogs, so several of our pups have gone to be bird hunters!
What do I do with all that hair?
Don't let the hair overwhelm you! Think of it this way: It takes much less time to groom a poodle once every 6 or 8 weeks than it does to vacuum up a houseful of hair every day! And that's one of the most-loved things about poodles. They don't shed! So let him up on the couch, in your bed, even under the covers. No dog hair here! The other great thing? Poodles don't ever get a stinky dog smell.
Poodles need to be groomed about once every six to eight weeks. You can take them to a professional groomer, or, with just a few tools, you can groom them yourself at home! Grooming helps build the bond between you and your puppy and can be lots of fun.
We take the easy route with our poodles. Nothing fancy here! We let their hair grow out and then shave it all off every few months. During the winter we let their hair grow a little longer.
If you're looking for the classic poodle show cut, you can certainly do that at home with just a little practice!
If you take your poodle to a professional groomer, the cost will be about $50 to $80 per visit. If you groom at home, you can get everything you need (to last a lifetime) for around $150.
Poodles do need their ears groomed as well. There are lots of products that make this easy to do at home. Or, if you take your poodle to a groomer, the groomer will take care of their ears.
